The Scorched Statesman is a custom mystery written for the game Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective. Investigate the arson of the Grosvener Art Gallery and find the culprit, even though someone's confessed.
The Scorched Statesman casts the players as investigators, working under the employ of the core game's titular Sherlock Holmes. In this mystery, a young man's sister comes to Sherlock with a case that appears to already be solved. Her brother has already confessed, and is being kept at Scottland Yard, but the girl insists that he isn't responsible.
Parse through authentic newspapers, evidence, and witness testimony while travelling across London and truly scrutinizing details to discover the truth behind the Grosvenor Arsons.
The Scorched Statesman is a custom mystery written for the game Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective. At its core, this module is a mystery game, told in the form of short story blurbs to be read aloud. Players use the clues embedded in the booklet text, images, a map, and other "props" such as a newspaper to put together what the mystery actually was and solve the case.
Helped conceptualize, design, and develop the core mystery of the game and how players would make their way through it.
Helped write and edit the game document, running through multiple playtests, recording feedback, and working with my peers to change design and writing to balance the difficulty of the mystery and better express our original vision for the mystery.
The Scorched Statesman was a deliverable project for the class Narrative Game Design. I worked on this project alongside my peers Luke Brockmann, Annamaria Koshy, and Matt Cutts. Below is our design statement.
